RANSPORTATION

how to get to Ispra and around

The public transport situation in Ispra is, let´s say, sub-optimal with very few trains leaving Ispra train station a day but at least regular bus connections to Sesto Calende (14 km) and Varese (25 km). The next, more frequently served train stations are in Besozzo (7 km) and Sesto Calende. From there you can catch trains to Milano (also Malpensa), Torino, Stresa or Switzerland. With Malpensa/Milano, one of Italy´s major airports, only 30 km away, Europe and the rest of the world seem a hell lot closer than what you would expect of a provincial town like Ispra; at least if you own a car as the perceived distance to Malpensa doubles or triples if you have to rely on public transport. Last but not least, in summer Ispra can be reached and fled from by ferry with lines running South to Angera and Arona and North to Stresa and Intra. G  ETTING TO THE AIRPORTS

General tips:

  • Always remember to validate your ticket before getting on the train.

  • If there is no ticket office at the railway station you can buy a ticket from a conductor or sometimes at tabaccheria, if there is one (open) in the vicinity.

  • Shuttle buses to all airports (Malpensa, Linate, Bergamo – Orio al Serio) depart from Milan Central Station and run also between the airports. Other ways to catch your flight you can find below.

Getting to Malpensa Airport

  • TILO Malpensa Express train sevice from Laveno Mombello FS (via Diaz 21, http://www.rfi.it/), via Sangiano, Besozzo and Travedona-Bidronno. Last two stations are the closest to Ispra.

Getting to Linate Airport

  • Train from Laveno Mombello FNM (station beside the ferry port, http://www.ferrovienord.it/) to Milano Cadorna. Train goes via Cittiglio, Gemonio, Cocquio and Gavirate.

  • In Cadorna railway station walk to the end of the platform and buy metro ticket at the shop.

  • Go to the metro station which is immediately outside the station and take metro M1 (red line) to Piazza San Babila (direction: Sesto 1 Maggio F.S.)

  • Leave metro station and go to the corner of Piazza San Babila and street Corso Europa. At the ATM bus stop (fermata) situated there, wait for the bus 73 or X73. It takes 20-25 minutes to get to the airport, buses leave every 10 minutes. Keep your metro ticket because it is still valid for the bus (for the way back you will need two tickets because the ticket validated in a bus cannot be used in metro).
